If you’re planning on getting married this year, you’ve probably started to think about your wedding day makeup.

It’s your big day, and you’re going to want to look and feel your best, whether that means creating your own bridal look or having a professional come in and do it for you.

Choosing to hire a professional will give you one less thing to worry about on the morning of your wedding. You’ll be able to relax, knowing you look your absolute best walking down the aisle.

If you’re unsure of what to look for when choosing your bridal makeup artist, here are my top tips to help get you started.

Start early

Bridal makeup artists tend to open their books up to two years in advance and can get booked up pretty quickly. So, it’s never too early to start thinking about who you might like to do your makeup on your special day.

Find makeup styles you like

Before you start looking for your makeup artist, head to Google, Pinterest, or your favourite bridal magazines and start pulling together bridal makeup looks you like. Try to think what it is about these styles that you like, and don’t forget to consider the features and skin tone of the person in the image (the more similar they are to yours the more likely this is a good look for you too).

Once you know what styles you’re looking for, you can begin to research makeup artists who can help bring your vision to life.

Check out reviews and pictures

Look at the websites and social media profiles of makeup artists to see their previous work. Good bridal makeup artists will have plenty of examples of brides they’ve worked with. Ensure that the artists you’re researching have actual wedding experience by looking at their pictures of real brides.

Don’t forget to read their reviews. When a bride takes the time to thank a makeup artist after their wedding, you know they’ve done a pretty great job! Most makeup artists will include testimonials on their website (you can read mine here). You can also check testimonials on social media and Google. Facebook and Google Reviews are great places to look because these are written by real people and can’t be taken down - there’s no hiding from them!

Create a shortlist and reach out

Create a shortlist of your favourite researched makeup artists and begin to reach out to find out availability, prices, and whether you think they’ll be a good fit for you.

Make sure to book a call with them or send them an email (whichever suits you) and ask them any questions or speak to them about the concerns you have about your wedding makeup.

Questions you should ask your bridal makeup artist include:

  • Can they travel on the day?

  • Do they do trials?

  • What makeup brands do they use?

  • How long will it take to finish your makeup on the day?

  • How much will it cost?

  • What happens if they fall ill or have an emergency on the day?

You can check out my answers to some of these questions here

Find a makeup artist who gets you

The morning of your wedding is a special day, so make sure you feel comfortable and secure with the person you choose. Your chosen artist will be a calming influence on the day, blending into your wedding party, and ensuring you can sit back and just relax!

Try to find someone adaptable, who will be willing to travel to you, so you don’t have to visit a studio on the morning of your wedding.

Book a trial

Once you’ve chosen and reserved your makeup artist for your special day, book a bridal trial to meet and connect with your artist and achieve your desired makeup look, allowing for their expertise and your vision to merge.  Use the trial to test different looks and don’t be afraid to try different lipstick shades or change another element in the look to get it just right!

This will also be the perfect time to test out those bridal looks you researched at the very beginning!

Price

Last, but definitely not least, look for a makeup artist who can fit your wedding budget. Ensure that everything you want on the day is included in the package you choose and find out the extra cost of any additional services you may need (you can check out my packages and prices here). Remember, you are hiring a professional and paying for their expertise, so don’t always go straight for the cheapest option If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is!
